Color-changing tanzanite is considered a particularly unique and rare variety of tanzanite, as it can exhibit a remarkable shift in color under different lighting conditions. It is estimated that only about 1% of all tanzanite gemstones exhibit this color-changing phenomenon.
Color-changing tanzanite typically displays a blue to violet hue in natural daylight, but can shift to a more reddish-purple or brownish-yellow color in incandescent light or candlelight. This striking shift in color is due to the presence of vanadium ions in the gemstone, which absorb different wavelengths of light depending on the lighting conditions.
